Ben Schenstead holds an ARCT Diploma in classical guitar from the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Music degree (with Great Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan. Ben has taken masterclasses with guitar luminaries Christopher Parkening in Bozeman, Montana, and Oscar Ghiglia at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts. He also has played in masterclasses for Manuel Barrueco, Pavel Steidl and Andrew York. Ben also holds Bachelor of Education and Master of Education degrees.
Ben developed programs in classical guitar for the University of Saskatchewan Music Department, where he instructed guitar for twenty years. He has also taught courses in World Music at First Nations University in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Ben has given successful guitar concerts in both Saskatchewan and Alberta, and has served as a judge for many music and talent competitions including the NorthWest Guitar Festival. Many of his guitar students have went on to successful careers in music as performers and teachers.
In November of 1999, Ben Schenstead released his first solo classical guitar CD, "Sunburst" to critical acclaim. The album, which was nominated for a Prairie Music Award, features popular classical guitar pieces with international flavor, and an original composition. It has been featured on various CBC programs. The Winnipeg Free Press has described Ben as Òa technically whistle-clean, tasteful artistÓ with Òwell-sprung rhythms and solid lyrical sensibility.Ó
Ben has performed twice on the National Aboriginal Awards Show , broadcast on CBC TV and on APTN. Ben is currently Assistant Professor in the Education Program, First Nations University, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Ben also keeps a small clientele of private guitar students and also maintains a busy performing schedule. His recent concerto performances with the acclaimed chamber orchestra Prairie Virtuosi was recorded for broadcast by CBC radio.
