The term "transcription" denotes music that is highly faithful to the original composition, with little or no changes to the music itself. An example is C.P.E. Bach's "Solfeggio", which has maintained all notes of the original manuscript. The term "arrangement" refers to music that has been modified or altered to a greater or lesser degree, for either reasons relating to the instrument it is being arranged for, or for musical effect, or both.

One final note: The pages of each score are published in separate gif files, to maintain structural integrity when printing. Be sure to obtain all pages of each score, numbered 1of3, 2of3, 3of3, and so on. TO PRINT: You may find that your page setup size will have to be reduced to 85% to 90% in order to print everything that is on the gif file. (The files should be legible, but due to the limitations of resolution inherent in gif files, they are far from engraver quality.)

C.P.E. Bach:
Solfeggio 1of3
Solfeggio 2of3
Solfeggio 3of3

Comments: This piece is for the advanced player, who wishes to play a virtuoso level piece in the "classic" Baroque style. This piece not only sounds great on clavier or harpsichord, but transfers very well to the guitar in the hands of a good player. Long stretches are required. Listening to the midi file below will give you an idea of what this piece sounds like on a harpsichord.

Jean-Philipe Rameau:

Fanfarinette Score -Page 3of3
Fanfarinette Part I -Page 1of2
Fanfarinette Part I -Page 2of2
Fanfarinette Part II -Page 1of2
Fanfarinette Part II -Page 2of2
Fanfarinette Part III -Page 1of1

Comments: This piece was initially popularized by Bob James' album of synthesized Rameau pieces. The CBC Radio program "Disk Drive" made millions of listeners familiar with the Bob James version (which, by the way, is beautifully done). In recent years, many musical groups have come up with their own version of this piece, whether it is salsa, Spanish flamenco style (LA Guitar Quartet), jazz with cool vibes, tango style with accordion, violin and guitar, bluegrass, and so on. The version posted here is faithful to the original Rameau composition and is suitable for intermediate and up players. The above files are in jpeg format, at 150 dpi. Enjoy!

The following piece is an original, and reflects my considerable interest in popular fingerstyle guitar. The piece below has overtones of jazz, folk, and classical influences.
"Farewell" by Ben Schenstead Copyright © 2000 SOCAN

Farewell 1of3
Farewell 2of3
Farewell 3of3

"Farewell" is a fingerstyle guitar solo that has light classical influences. The mood of the piece seems to suggest the kinds of feelings we may have when we bid someone a fond farewell. Our feelings of regret at seeing them leave are balanced with warm anticipation of seeing them again. This composition is the last track on my "Sunburst" CD, and you can listen to a clip of it on my Home Page. I hope you enjoy this piece.
